AI agents that finish the job
Holding a conversation is the easy part now. What separates a useful agent from a toy is what happens at the end of it.
What an AI agent actually is, without the sales pitch
An AI agent for business is software that holds a conversation and then does something at the end of it: books the job, takes the details, passes it to a human, updates the record. The conversation is the easy part now. What separates a useful agent from an expensive toy is what happens after it.
A chatbot that answers questions and stops is a toy. An agent that answers, qualifies, checks the calendar and books the slot is a member of staff that costs you a few dollars a month.
The three that pay in a service business
The after-hours answerer
Most enquiries arrive when you are on a job or asleep. An agent that answers in seconds, at nine at night, captures work that would otherwise go to whoever called back first.
The qualifier
Asks the three questions you would ask: what, where, when. You wake up to jobs sorted into worth calling and not worth calling.
The chaser
Follows up on quotes without being asked. This is the one owners underrate and it is usually the one that pays for the whole build.
Can AI answer your phone? Honestly, mostly
An AI receptionist for a small business works well for straightforward inbound: taking details, answering common questions, booking a standard job. It works badly when the caller is upset, when the job is unusual, or when the answer depends on judgment about a property somebody has not seen.
So the build is not "replace the phone." It is: the agent handles the simple majority, recognises when it is out of its depth, and hands those to a person immediately with the context already captured. Anybody selling you a receptionist that handles everything has not run a service business.
Where we draw the line
We do not build an agent that pretends to be a person. It says what it is. Beyond it simply being the right thing to do, customers work it out anyway, and the ones who feel tricked do not book.
Questions
- Can AI answer my business phone?
- For straightforward inbound, yes. Taking details, answering common questions and booking a standard job all work well. It works badly when the caller is upset, the job is unusual, or the answer needs judgment about a property nobody has seen, so the build hands those to a person immediately with the context already captured.
- What is the difference between an AI chatbot and an AI agent?
- A chatbot answers and stops. An agent answers, then does something: qualifies the enquiry, checks the calendar, books the slot, updates the record. The doing is what makes it worth paying for.
- Will customers know they are talking to AI?
- Yes, because we build it to say so. People work it out anyway, and the ones who feel tricked do not book.
